Nervous driver sits behind the wheel of a car

As a driving instructor, you'll probably come across nervous drivers almost every day. Learning to drive can be quite a daunting experience and it's your job to try to calm those nerves and support learners in becoming a responsible and safe driver.

Using mindfulness to ease nerves

San Harper is an ADI and a BAMBA accredited mindfulness teacher. She strongly believes that mindfulness and driving lessons go hand in hand.

According to San, you can use attitudes of mindfulness to help learners overcome their nerves. "Scientific research tells us that mindfulness does have a positive impact," she said. "We come to things in life with an attitude of 'like' and 'dislike', quite a lot of the time. We have preconceived ideas because we view the world through a veil of past experiences, [...] and pupils do this a lot."

"You often hear people saying things like 'I hate roundabouts'. They have a pre-conceived idea and are setting themselves up for failure."
